Destination Wedding in Venice: when to send the invitations

Timing of wedding invitations: all you need to know

When to send invitations of your wedding in Venice

One of the most frequent questions we receive from the couples who ask us to organize their marriage in Venice is about when to send the wedding invitations and save-the-dates.

First of all, there’s no single answer to this question, since a wedding can be organized in two months or in a whole year.

Since the majority of the couples who contact us are having a destination wedding in Venice we are focusing this article on a wedding that takes a year to be organized and gives the guests the time to book their flight to attend the ceremony.

Save the Dates vs Wedding Invitations

Before talking about when to send the wedding invitations, we need to know the difference between a Save-the-Date card and a real Wedding Invitation. At first sight, they might seem the same thing so let’s see what is what.

A Save-the-Date is a card that tells your guests to save the date of your wedding, which means that its main role is allowing your guests to organize themselves to be sure to attend your wedding.

On the Save-the-Date cards, the information about when and where the wedding will be held is included too. This card also informs your guests that they will receive a formal invitation: the wedding invitation.

As you may have already understood, the wedding invitations have the role of officially inviting your guests, giving them some more detailed information about the wedding and asking them to confirm their presence.

Your wedding invitations should also include all the information about transportations, accommodations and how to get to Venice for the wedding.

When to send a Save-the-Date

Now that we know the difference between a Save-the-Date card and a Wedding Invitation, we can talk about when to send the former.

Usually, save the dates are best sent out 8 months before the wedding, in order to let your guest plan their trip to Venice. Having a destination wedding in Venice is the most romantic choice you could ever make to celebrate your special day, but if you want your guest to be here to celebrate with you, you need to give them the time to organize their days off and to book a flight at a reasonable price.

If your engagement isn’t at least 8-months long, you can send the save-to-dates about 4 months in advance, but make sure that there’s plenty of time between them and your wedding invitations.

When to send the Wedding Invitations

As we wrote in our wedding check-list article, the first thing to do is deciding how your wedding invitations will look like and order them at least 4-6 months before your wedding date. Once you’ve have chosen the template of your wedding invitations, make sure that you have enough time for printing and mailing them to your guests. You should also be aware that if you invite someone from the other side of the world, it might need some extra time for the invitation to arrive.

So, when should you send your wedding invitations? Usually 6-8 weeks before the big day. If you choose not to send a Save-the-Date, you might want to send the wedding invitations a few months before.
