Getting married in Venice: what requirements are needed

Of course, if you want to get married in Venice legally there is some paperwork to sign and prepare, but nothing more than this.

Obviously, the thing is more complicated - but not that much - if you want to get married in Venice with a religious ceremony and want it to have a legal value too.

If you want your marriage to be recognized in your own country as a legal union and you both aren't Italian citizens, you have to ask for a "nulla osta", a declaration stating that there is no impediment to the marriage. This declaration has to be translated into Italian and notarized.

You can also present a “certificate of legal capacity to marry”, released by your own country, and submit it when you're applying for your banns to be posted.

If both of you are citizens of a non-EU country, the "nulla osta" won't be the only thing you might need to get married in Venice. In fact, there's another paper you should have: a document demonstrating that you meet the Italian legal requirements.

How far in advance should you come to Venice before getting married?

The answer is: it depends.

Usually, you don't need to arrive in Venice more than 2 or 3 days before your wedding date, but you might need to come earlier (10 days before more or less), depending on your nationality.

Is there any difference between a civil and a religious wedding in Venice, regarding paperwork?

There might be some differences, yes.

Basically, if you want a Catholic ceremony for your wedding, you need to attend a Pre-Cana course in our hometown which usually lasts 6 or 10 months. This will give you another "nulla osta" that makes you suitable to get married in Venice.

Catholic weddings in Italy can have a legal validity only if you decide so, but if you have already married in our home country, you just need to present your marriage certificate to the church and the problem is solved.

What are the rules to get married in Venice?

Like many other countries, Italy has some rules to respect, for example:

• -Both bride and groom have to be single or legally divorced.
•  Bride and groom cannot be relatives of first or second degree
• For a Catholic wedding, both the bride and groom must be baptized
• If one of the two already married once and got divorced, you can't have a Catholic ceremony
