What is the theme of the next year Carnival?

Since it was born, at the end of the 1970s, themes and masks of the Carnival has often dealt with travelling, the meeting of different cultures in a sort of foreign-trade zone as Venice can be considered.

In 1982 a twinning with the city of Naples made Pulcinella e Arlecchino meet each other; they are the two Art Comedy masks who make a sort of caricature of the Venetians’ and Neapolitans’ character respectively.

In 1984 the theme was “Venetians and foreign people”, in 1985 there was a twinning between Venice and Paris, two of the most famous cities in the world and two of the most appealing destinations for travelers who have always dreamt to have a memory of these cities once in their life.

In 1994 the theme was the East and porcelains.

In 1998 the Carnival was dedicated to Giacomo Casanova in order to celebrate the bicentenary of his death. Casanova held dear the Carnival, thus its cultural, licentious, cosmopolite and libertine soul, typical of the end of the 18th century is with no doubt the perfect period to remember the famous Venetian adventurer.

Il 2003 the Carnival was dedicated to Federico Fellini, a visionary  director, in order to celebrate ten years after his death.

In 2004, the title of the Carnival was “Orient-Express: Masked travel along the Silk road” and it involved four countries: Thailand, China, Japan and India.

In 2006 the theme was “The Drake and the Lion” which was linked to China and theatre pieces. The performances took place from the 17th to the 28th of February 2006.

During that edition events and private parties followed one another. The programme made everyone happy, both children, thanks to parties and attractions on the calli (alleys) and in Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s Square), and adults, thanks to the prestigious parties inside historical palaces of the city.

In 2012 the Carnival was dedicated to theatralization of the everyday life; the title was: “Life is fiction. Mask yourself”.

Venice transformed itself into the European capital of the theatre, as it was in the past, a real breeding ground of theatre performances of very high level. Figures like Antonio Vivaldi or Antonio Guardi, called Il Canaletto played a very important role in the scenes of important theatre setting.

It was an active and beating Carnival, any kind of stimulus was provided in order to develop creativity; the main idea of this Carnival was:

“The essence of the Carnival is a masquerade, and the theatre is the representation of the human comedy and its infinite character. Everyone plays multiple roles in their own lives and at the Carnival they can magically, due to the condition of extra-territoriality of social roles imposed or incurred, continue the ancient custom that the time of the Carnival season coincided historically with the theatre town”.
