During this time, the palace was updated to meet the modern Renaissance taste with the construction of the loggia as well as the spiral staircase known as “bovolo” (Venetian word for “snail”). It was Pietro Contarini who  commissioned these major structural modifications after becoming the owner of the palazzo in 1489. The job was given to a local artisan named Giovanni Candi.
