Civil Wedding 

The civil wedding is celebrated in the town hall in front of the major or another civil state office.

According to the Italian law, it can be celebrated only in town halls and/or in other places as municipal museums, villas or gardens having obtained the status of sede distaccata (annex).

Civil wedding is characterized by simplicity and rapidity and it has a legal validity.

 

Requested documents

Residents:

Both the bride and the groom have to request the publication of banns to the civil state office of the city where the bride or the groom lives and they have to remain exposed in both cities of the bride and the groom for at least 8 days.

Three days after those 8 days, the parson can celebrate the wedding with the presence of two witnesses of age. Publications remain effective for 180 days.

 

Residents in other cities:

Moreover, the written request by the Major who has published the banns is needed.

 

Nonresident foreign citizens

  • European citizens have to ask for the certificate stating they can get married released by their city of residence
  • American citizens have to produce the sworn declaration in the American consolate in Italy and the notoriety act
  • Other foreign citizens outside the European Union have to present a declaration released by the Italian consulate or the embassy of their State where an authorization to the wedding is provided. The authorization consists of a declaration testing that, based on the national law, there is no reason why the marriage shouldn’t be celebrated. Once obtained the authorization to the wedding, it is necessary to go to the Legal Office of the Prefecture in order to make the consol’s or the ambassador’s signature authenticated.

Religious Wedding

Religious wedding in the catholic Church encompass tradition, culture and religion at the same time.

It is a very suggestive rite and it can have a civil recognition.

It can be celebrated in the church of the town where the bride or the groom live otherwise, if celebrated in another parish, parsons and the administration have to give the requested documents.

Symbolic Wedding
