The Redentore Festival

The Festa del Redentore takes place on the third weekend of July and it is a festival that is particularly popular among Venetians as it combines a religious theme with a spectacular celebration that attracts thousands of visitors. On Saturday night, the inimitable setting of St. Mark's Basin hosts a phantasmagorical firework display that lights up the spires, domes and bell towers of the city with a kaleidoscope of colours and reflections.

THE HISTORY OF REDENTORE: from the origins until today

The Festa del Redentore was first held to celebrate the city's deliverance from a terrible plague which affected Europe at the end of the 16th century. The pestilence caused the death of hundreds of people of every social class and it infected more than 50.000 people in Venice in less than 2 years. The pestilence arrived in Venice due to the ships coming from the eastern countries Venice had a heavy volume of commercial traffic with. The Senate of Venice accepted Doge Mocenigo’s proposal of building a temple where descendants could go in order to celebrate the end of the pestilence. After many discussions they decided to build a church dedicated to Christ Redeemer on the Giudecca island.

The Church dominates the panorama on the Giudecca island and it represents Antonio Palladio’s thought about the Renaissance architecture and an attempt to conciliate the Christian church with the features of the classical temple.

On the Saturday before the third Sunday in July, a 330 metre-long votive bridge made of boats across the Giudecca canal connects the island with the area called Zattere near the Chiesa del Santo Spirito: people can walk through the canal and reach Chiesa del Redentore.

Venice Patriarch blesses the opening of the celebrations from the stairs of the Redentore when the bridge is ready to be crossed and the crowd starts walking in procession towards the Giudecca. Then, the first holy mass begins at 7.30 p.m., the second at 0.30 in the night and the third at the 8.00 on Sunday morning.
